Dutch gas grid operator Gasunie announced on Tuesday it has taken the final investment decision for the first portion of its planned EUR-1.5-billion (USD 1.64bn) national hydrogen network.

The energy infrastructure company said in a statement that its subsidiary Hynetwork Services will invest more than EUR 100 million in the first section. It will be developed in Rotterdam, which has the potential to be a major gateway for hydrogen to northwest Europe, and will stretch for more than 30 km, from the Tweede Maasvlakte to Pernis.

Construction work is seen to begin after the summer and be completed by 2025.

The overall network will be 1,200 km long and, from 2030 onwards, will connect large industrial end-users in the Netherlands with surrounding countries such as Germany and Belgium, providing large industrial end-users with access to storage facilities and international supply.

About 85% of the network will reuse existing natural gas pipelines, which, Gasunie estimates, is 75% cheaper than building new infrastructure.
