On January 6, four companies, J-Power (J-Power), Industry One (Chuo-ku, Tokyo), NSW and Scalar (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo), announced an environmental value initiative that attaches time value to renewable energy. announced that they have begun joint development of a platform. Trials will be conducted for about six months, and commercial services are expected to begin in 2025.

Solar and wind power generation depends on weather conditions and cannot be provided consistently around the clock. Therefore, current transactions that only use environmental values (renewable energy credits such as fossil-free certificates) without time zone certification are incorrect. It is difficult to justify the simultaneous procurement of renewable energy in this sense. On the other hand, initiatives such as “Carbon Free Energy 24/7 (CFE)” which guarantees the use of 100% fossil-free energy sources every hour and nighttime solar power generation with battery storage are attracting attention. This suggests that the need to use environmental values corresponding to the actual electricity supply and demand situation is increasing.
To date, four companies have conducted a proof of concept (PoC) using ScalarDL, a database tamper detection middleware provided by Scalar. We have confirmed that power generation data can be preserved and tamper detected, and established a method for building a foundation for an environmental value platform that can handle large-scale transaction processing.
The platform provides a mechanism to accurately record the time when non-fossil energy sources such as solar and wind power generate electricity and link it with demand data to reveal the environmental value of each time period. By accurately calculating the non-fossil ratio by reflecting the different power mix according to the time of day, it is possible to visualize the electricity supply and demand during the actual times when a large amount of CO2 is emitted, contributing to reducing CO2 emissions in accordance with the actual situation.
ScalarDL's distributed ledger technology ensures that power generation data and environmental values are not tampered with. Verify that data in the platform is sourced from smart meters, etc., while ensuring accuracy and reliability. Instead of directly linking the amount of electricity generated and the amount of electricity used, environmental value is separated and pooled from non-fossil energy sources. With a design that allocates non-fossil rates to each consumer, environmental value can be traded equitably while processing large amounts of data quickly.
These functions are expected to maximize the use of non-fossil values while preventing the use of fossil fuels and support systems such as CFE 24/7, GX League and carbon credit market. In the future, the company hopes to contribute to promoting local energy production and consumption by adding more information about production locations.
