Australia and Japan are looking to strengthen hydrogen trade ties with a new agreement between the Australian Hydrogen Council (AHC) and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO).

The new Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) is hoped to “foster collaboration” to advance hydrogen priorities and strengthen trade ties between the two nations.
Aimed at improving information exchange and collaboration, AHC and JETRO will jointly work by exchanging reports, educational materials and lessons learned; deliver webinars and events for SMEs, start-ups and scale-ups; share relevant regulatory, political and funding information; and facilitate industry introductions.
Takayuki Watanabe, Managing Director Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands at JETRO, said, the trade body would like to collaborate with Australian universities and start-ups, as well as Japanese hydrogen firms.
Dr. Fiona Simon, CEO of AHC said, “With Japan as a top trading partner for Australia, the AHC intends to champion collaboration between the two nations to accelerate both hydrogen industries through strong bilateral ties and cooperation.”
Australia has been slated as a key future supplier of hydrogen to Japan. The Hydrogen Council’s Global Hydrogen Flows report, said by 2050, Australia would increasingly become a key exporter of ammonia to Asia.
Last year (2023), the Japanese Government committed ¥220bn ($1.4bn) to the Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC) project to export hydrogen from Victoria to Japan.
