UK-based Riversimple is developing a hydrogen-powered supercar that boasts a 400-mile range and weighs only 620kg.

With plans for a limited production run, the car is expected to boast a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds, the car’s top speed will be just 100mph, using 29kW of fuel cell power, while weighing some 1,000kg less than the battery-electric Lotus Evija.
The initiative aims to address the “crisis of vehicle weight.” To achieve this, Riversimple is partnering with postgraduate students at Coventry University’s Automotive and Transport Design course for the vehicle’s design.
As part of a design competition, students’ proposals for the car’s interior and exterior could be used, with the judging panel featuring VW’s Head of Design, Andreas Mindt.
The supercar is aimed to “push the limits of range, efficiency and lightweighting” in a bid to “redefine” sportscars for the 21st century. The average weight of new cars up 25% from what they were just seven years ago, which Riversimple says has led to numerous negative consequences.
“Increased resource consumption, embedded carbon in manufacturing and energy consumption in use, increased injuries from accidents, air and water quality from type emissions – and battery electrification has exacerbated the issues,” the company said.
The firm claims the supercar is a “different take” on what makes for the “ultimate driving experience,” aiming to move away from “increasingly aggressive” styling, naming and speeds.
“This car is an antidote to excess and power for the sake of it, and is an opportunity to redefine sportscars for the 21st century,” said Hugo Spowers, founder and Chief Engineer at Riversimple.
“We want the look to embody an elegant and sophisticated simplicity but unquestionably modern.”
Riversimple says the new supercar will use similar technology to its latest production fuel cell car – based on its Rasa.
