    3 October 2025 – Press Release

Brussels, 3 October 2025 – The European Hydrogen Week concluded today with stakeholders calling for an updated Hydrogen Strategy that reflects current realities and emphasizes resilience.

More than 1,200 participants joined this agile, conference-only edition of EU Hydrogen Week, engaging in discussions on how to accelerate Europe’s decarbonisation. From high-level policy conferences to B2B and innovation forums, lawmakers, entrepreneurs, and industry representatives presented solutions to key challenges such as slow implementation, high costs, and complex regulations.

A renewed Hydrogen Strategy is seen as urgently needed to strengthen Europe’s resilience and ensure energy sovereignty. Key priorities identified include:

    • Enforcement: Faster and more consistent implementation of EU legislations like the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation.

    • Infrastructure: Accelerated development of hydrogen pipelines, storage, and transport systems to connect producers and end-users across Member States.

    • Public Funding: Establishment of an Industrial Decarbonisation Bank, extension of the Hydrogen Bank, and broader use of revenues from ETS allowance auctions to support hydrogen and e-fuel deployment. Governments should also commit to an eSAF pilot tender using a double-sided auction.

    • Lead Markets & Resilience: Create predictable demand for clean products like green steel and green fertilizers through procurement rules, boosting supply and ensuring Europe’s energy resilience.

    • Simplification & Protection of First Movers: Streamline overly strict rules while ensuring early adopters are shielded from regulatory changes that could harm their projects.

Renewable and low-carbon hydrogen will be critical to ensuring flexibility and long-term energy storage, enabling Europe to meet its climate goals without compromising autonomy.

“We’d like to thank everyone who made the 2025 European Hydrogen Week a success – sponsors, partners, panelists, and attendees. What is clear from this week is that the sector is united around the urgent need for action from the EU. Our work and investments must be protected, early movers supported, and legislation simplified. Unlocking the hydrogen sector is essential to Europe’s resilience and energy independence,” said Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe.
