Mitsui starts purchasing electricity and environmental value from rooftop solar facilities in FIP system

Rooftop solar power plant owned by Japan Benex Corporation (Inzai-shi, Chiba Prefecture; capacity: 3,006.6 kW)
On June 11, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui", Headquarters: Tokyo, President and CEO: Kenichi Hori) began purchasing electric energy and environmental value*1 from rooftop solar facilities owned by Japan's Japan Benex Corporation ("Japan Benex").
Through this project, Mitsui will participate in the long-term purchase of electricity and environmental value from rooftop solar power plants owned by Benex Japan at four locations (in Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures). in the service area of Tokyo Electric Power Corporation. Facilities, formerly under the electricity input tariff (FIT) system*2, will be converted to the electric power input charge (FIP) system*3. Furthermore, on behalf of Japan Benex, Mitsui will also provide accurate forecasts of solar power output, changes according to weather and other factors, and provide demand balancing functions, in addition to sell electricity in the market. Demand for renewable energy and other forms of energy with a small impact on the environment is steadily increasing.
As the focus on climate change and decarbonization countermeasures increases globally, expanding the share of renewable energy in Japan's power generation structure has become a key priority. Meanwhile, accurate production forecasting and supply-demand balance are expected to play an ever more important role in efforts to develop solar, wind and other renewable energy into core power source.
Mitsui has worked to accumulate knowledge of supply-demand balance in regions that are leading the world in bringing renewable energy to the market, such as Europe, the United States and Brazil. By applying this global expertise to the Japanese market, Mitsui will contribute to promoting the introduction of renewable energy in the Japanese market, as well as creating a carbon-neutral society.
*1 Environmental values are separate from those of electrical and thermal energy generated and are related to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
*2 The Electricity Input Tariff (FIT) system is based on a government commitment that electricity companies will purchase electricity produced with renewable energy at a specified price for a specified period of time. The system was introduced as a way to increase the use of renewable energy.
*3 Under the power supply fee (FIP) system, purchasing at a fixed price is replaced by the addition of a specific premium (subsidy) to the selling price when manufacturers renewable energy sales of electricity, including sales on the wholesale market. Power companies are required to ensure that their generation output matches their power generation plan and that their demand plan matches actual demand.
