ACCELERATING THE REORGANIZATION OF UNIVERSITY FACILITIES IN 23 WARDS/TOKYO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND DENTISTRY, ETC., ARE ALSO AFFECTED BY THE TREND OF RETURNING TO URBAN CENTERS

Movements toward reorganizing university facilities in Tokyo's 23 wards are gathering pace. School buildings, built to accommodate rising college enrollment after the war, are becoming dated in many places. In the future, Tokyo University of Medicine and Dentistry will begin the comprehensive redevelopment of Yushima Campus (Bunkyo Ward), and Kokushikan University is also promoting the reorganization of Setagaya Campus (Setagaya Ward). Attention is also focused on the future use of facilities that have fulfilled their purpose, including Chuo University's Ichigaya Campus (Shinjuku Ward).

The reorganization of facilities is also influenced by the trend of moving suburban facilities to urban centers. Since the 1970s, schools have been forced to increase the size of school buildings to accommodate increases in student numbers. Chuo University opened Tama Campus (Hachioji City) in 1978 and Aoyama Gakuin University opened Atsugi Campus (Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture) in 1982.

However, in 2002, the situation changed when the Factory Restriction Act, which restricted the establishment and expansion of universities, was repealed. Chuo University developed Myogadani Campus (Bunkyo Ward) and moved the Faculty of Law from Tama Campus in 2013. Aoyama Gakuin University also consolidated its functions at Aoyama Campus (Shibuya Ward) and completed started at Atsugi Campus in 2003.

The Yushima Campus of Tokyo University of Medicine and Dentistry is expected to be reorganized in the future. There are currently about 20 buildings, most of which will be rebuilt except two. In addition to the hospitals affiliated with the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry, a new “common laboratory building” and “enhanced function building” were constructed. Since the company can secure a certain amount of money using the real estate it owns in Koto Ward, the company plans to carry out the rebuilding process gradually.

At Kokushikan University's Setagaya campus, plans are underway to consolidate six old buildings into four. A base plan is expected to be developed in fiscal year 2024. The total area of the reconstructed facility is expected to be 34,000 to 390,000 square meters. The idea is to complete the merger by FY2034.

Chuo University's Ichigaya campus is located on 4,123 square meters of land, adjacent to the Ministry of National Defense, and the building has a total area of 160,000 square meters. It used to be the headquarters of the law school, but in 2013, it was moved to the newly built Surugadai campus (Chiyoda Ward). Most of the building is currently unused and it is expected that efforts to utilize it will take shape in the future.
