CENTRAL TOKYO’S POPULATION CONTINUES TO GROW

Despite the pandemic, the number of Japanese residents in Tokyo’s central 3 wards of Chuo, Chiyoda, and Minato, reached a record high in July.

The population has increased by 0.6% since January 2022 and now sits at 470,673 residents. The biggest percentage increase in the three wards was seen in Minato ward with the population growing by 0.75% over that period. Chuo ward’s population increased by 0.55%.

Between January 2017 and July 2022, the population in Minato increased by 5.1%. Chuo ward saw its population swell by 14.5% and Chiyoda’s by 12.7%, primarily due to the construction of new apartment buildings that provide housing for more residents.

The population data is based on the basic register of residents supplied by each ward and updated on the 1st of each month.
