APPROVAL GRANTED FOR MEIJI JINGU GAIEN REDEVELOPMENT

On February 17, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government issued development approval for the 349 billion Yen (US$2.6 billion) Meiji Jingu Gaien redevelopment. This site includes the Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Stadium and the historic Meiji Jingu Baseball Stadium.

Demolition of the existing buildings will start next month, with completion of the new project expected by 2036. The first building to be demolished will be the baseball stadium. The baseball field opened in 1926, a year after the formation of the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League – originally the highest level of baseball in Japan. Further additions were made over the years, with the circular exterior stands added in 1931. In 1934, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth played at the stadium during a tour of Japan. The stadium was confiscated by the US forces after WWII and the name was changed to Stateside Park from 1945 to 1952.

The 28-hectare project will see the location of the current baseball and rugby stadiums switched, tennis courts added to the Meiji Jingu Gaien park, and two high-rise buildings of 38 and 40 stories.

Approximately 743 trees will be removed, although the main ginkgo-lined avenue will not be affected.
