Google signs green hydrogen steel certificate deal with Stegra for up to 91,000 tonnes

Google has entered into an agreement with Stegra for the purchase of environmental attribute certificates (EACs) connected to Stegra's steel production in Boden, Sweden. The agreement covers EACs for a volume of up to 91,000 tonnes of steel for the first year, with an ambition to add more volumes over the length of the agreement.

Stegra is building the world's first large-scale green steel plant in Boden, aiming to produce 5 million tonnes of green steel annually. The company's process uses hydrogen produced from renewable electricity to remove oxygen from iron oxide, replacing coal in traditional steelmaking, and uses 100% renewable electricity for energy requirements in the manufacturing process.

With these EACs, Google can address the steel-related emissions from its own operations, including the construction of data centers. The agreement also generates cash flow for Stegra in its early years of operations and supports the ramp-up of production.

Near-zero emission steel will initially be available in limited volumes and in few locations. Purchasing environmental attributes enables committed buyers to address their steel-related emissions even when direct procurement of the physical product is challenging due to geographical separation or value chain separation. This mechanism is known as "book and claim", where environmental attributes are decoupled from the physical product.
