Tokyo, Japan – Kawasaki Heavy Industries Chairman Yoshinori Kanehana told CNBC on September 16 that the company's hydrogen energy project is expected to be profitable by the late 2030s, as Kawasaki advances a commercial-scale liquefied hydrogen supply chain including the world's largest 40,000 m³ carrier under construction.
The world's largest liquefied hydrogen carrier
In January 2026, Kawasaki signed a contract with Japan Suiso Energy to build the world's largest liquefied hydrogen carrier, with a capacity of 40,000 m³, at its Sakaide Works in Kagawa Prefecture. The vessel is designed to meet anticipated global demand for hydrogen in the 2030s and will form the backbone of a future commercial hydrogen supply chain. JSE is the project operator for the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization's (NEDO) Green Innovation Fund project, which aims to demonstrate ship-to-base loading and unloading of liquefied hydrogen and conduct ocean-going trials by fiscal year ending March 2031.
Kawasaki built the world's first liquefied hydrogen carrier, the 1,250 m³ Suiso Frontier, in 2021, and participated in a Japan–Australia pilot demonstration the following year to show liquefied hydrogen can be exported safely to Japan.
Global supply chain expansion
Kawasaki has been developing a commercial-scale liquefied hydrogen supply chain since 2010. In November 2025, it broke ground on a key terminal facility for the Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain Commercialisation Demonstration project in Japan. In October 2025, Kawasaki, Daimler Truck and HHLA launched a strategic partnership to develop a liquid hydrogen supply chain into Europe via Hamburg.
In May 2026, MB Energy, Daimler Truck and Kawasaki signed a Joint Development Agreement to establish a liquefied hydrogen supply chain to Europe via the Port of Hamburg, targeting Commercial Operation Date by the early 2030s. The three companies will use their respective expertise to establish an economically viable supply chain, with Kawasaki providing expertise in hydrogen liquefiers, LH₂ storage tanks and LH₂ carrier ships.
Also in May 2026, Kawasaki and EcoLog signed a strategic alliance in the midstream segment of the liquefied hydrogen supply chain, encompassing maritime transportation, terminals and ship-to-shore interfaces. The collaboration covers the port of Amsterdam and is expected to accelerate hydrogen adoption in heavy-duty trucks and data centres.
At India Energy Week in January 2026, Kanehana told Bloomberg Television: "The best way to carry hydrogen is in liquefied hydrogen form." He said Kawasaki was interested in producing green hydrogen in India, liquefying it and shipping it to Japan, Europe or other markets.
Commercial targets
Kawasaki has historically targeted commercialisation of a liquefied hydrogen supply chain in the early 2030s, with full profitability expected to follow as volumes scale. The company aims to achieve hydrogen-related sales of 120 billion yen in 2030 and 300 billion yen in 2040. As of 2022, Kawasaki set a target of 400 billion yen in hydrogen-related sales by 2030, positioning hydrogen as a core pillar of its long-term growth strategy.
