RECONSTRUCTION AUTHORITY/SPECIFIC REPATRIATION RESIDENTIAL RECONSTRUCTION AND REHABILITATION PLAN OF TOMIOKA TOWN APPROVED, ADDING 220 HECTARES TO THE DECONTAMINATION AREA

On the 16th, the Reconstruction Authority approved the "Designated Residential Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Plan of Tomioka Town" (2024-2029) adopted by Tomioka Town, Fukushima Prefecture, transforming this place into a designated re-residential area where the government is responsible for decontamination and waste of about 220 hectares is added. To lift the evacuation order following the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, we will comprehensively promote decontamination in the area, demolish houses, and restore and improve infrastructure such as roads, water and wastewater systems, based on approved plans. Decontamination will begin from April onwards, with the aim of lifting the evacuation order as soon as possible.

Tomioka Town applied for a revitalization plan on the 6th. Oragahama, Fukaya and Shinyanomori areas will be affected. According to the ``First Survey on Return Intentions in Hard-to-Return Areas in Oragahama and Fukaya Districts'' conducted by Tomioka Town and the Cabinet Office, 92 out of 244 households in both two counties expressed a desire to return (one or more people). Create an environment where local residents who wish to return can live in peace.

Thirteen years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear disaster, and in April 2017, evacuation orders were lifted for areas except those that were difficult to return to. again and through November 2023, for specific reconstruction and recovery base areas. Meanwhile, the evacuation order is still in place in two administrative districts in the town. The aim is to realize the return of all residents intending to return to the designated residential areas back in the 2020s, and to rebuild and revitalize the town.

The new designated repatriation settlement was established based on the Fukushima Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Special Measures Act amended last June. This is the fourth local government to be certified, following the first towns of Okuma and Futaba and Namie town in early February.
