Sarawak is taking a leading role in sustainable transportation with the launch of the Kuching Urban Transit System (KUTS), featuring Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles powered by hydrogen. This marks the first hydrogen-powered ART system outside China and represents a major milestone in the state’s ambition to build a smart, low-emission urban mobility network.

Sarawak’s Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, presented the project at the 2nd International Exhibition in Guangzhou, China, under the theme “Smart Mobility Driven by Digital Innovation, Green Energy for Seamless Connectivity.” He emphasized that KUTS demonstrates Sarawak’s commitment to combining clean energy, digital innovation, and intelligent public transportation systems to deliver long-term benefits for the community.

Alongside KUTS, Sarawak is implementing other initiatives to modernize public transportation. The Free Miri Smart Bus programme offers complimentary bus services in Miri and deploys Transit Signal Priority (TSP) technology to improve travel efficiency. The E-Penambang Project is electrifying traditional wooden river boats and is supported by the state’s first floating solar-powered charging station.

Looking ahead, Sarawak is planning to expand Kuching International Airport to handle up to 15 million passengers annually. The state is also preparing to launch its own airline, AirBorneo, to enhance domestic and international connectivity. Additionally, the Bintulu–Samalaju Transit System is being developed to meet the mobility needs of the growing industrial region.

Through these strategic projects, Sarawak aims to position itself as a global model for sustainable, technology-driven public transportation. The successful implementation of KUTS and its related initiatives will not only improve the quality of life for Sarawakians but may also serve as a reference model for cities across Southeast Asia.
