Yamanashi Prefecture has compiled the results of a demand survey to consider the possibility of airport development. Based on the number of seats on a low-cost carrier (LCC) small jet aircraft, it is likely that there will be approximately one flight per day (one round trip) on three routes: New Chitose (Hokkaido), Fukuoka, and Naha (Okinawa Prefecture). Based on terrain conditions and other factors, 29 proposed locations were selected with a standard runway length of 2,000 meters for regular domestic flights. According to the results of the comparative studies, it was found that each location has its own problems, such as asset relocation and runway construction. The Prefecture plans to continue to conduct further research on the necessity and feasibility of system development.
The survey results were reported at a meeting of the Yamanashi Prefecture Regional Aviation Study Group held on September 20. The project was conducted by Pacific Consultants in fiscal 2023 to investigate the feasibility of the project from the perspective of functional coordination between the Chuo Linear Shinkansen and the air route currently under construction.
In the demand survey, socioeconomic indicators and transport service levels were established based on the fiscal year 2030. Fares were based on the number of seats on LCC small jets and assumed a possible passenger traffic of 92,000 on the route. As a result, three routes - Fukuoka (estimated 134,000 people per year), Naha (120,000 people per year), and New Chitose (103,000 people per year) - have more than 92,000 people, and it is likely that these routes will That is what I found out.
In the survey of suitable locations for the airport, 29 candidate sites were selected based on flat terrain. The runway was designed to be 2,000 meters long, assuming it would be used for regular domestic flights, private jets, small and medium sized aircraft for business jets, and regional jets. From there, we compared and considered various conditions such as not falling under the impossibility conditions for establishing an airport, short approach time from Yamanashi Linear Station, being able to secure airport land along the length of the runway, and being able to establish a landing strip. The candidate sites were considered in five stages, but it was clear that each candidate site had its own problems.
Based on the opening of the Shinkansen Line, the airport development concept envisages developing an airport in the prefecture that will complement Haneda Airport and capture demand. In May 2022, Governor Kotaro Nagasaki announced that he would begin consideration.
