INEOS and Daimler Truck kick off liquid hydrogen truck trials

INEOS Inovyn and Daimler Truck have begun customer trials using “Europe’s first” heavy-duty liquid hydrogen-powered truck.

Taking place over the next 12 months, the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Trucks are expected to make around 250 deliveries supporting PVC customers across Germany. H2 View understands that the vehicles benefit from a range of more than 1,000km and they can carry the same payload as a conventional diesel vehicle.

INEOS Inovyn is recognised as Europe’s PVC leader and the largest operator of industrial electrolysis, producing hydrogen across the continent. In 2023, the company became the “first” European company to have its renewable hydrogen fully audited with greenhouse gas (GHG) gas data certification.

INEOS, Amazon, Air Products, Holcim and Wiedmann & Winz are all supporting Daimler in this fuel cell-powered project. INEOS has the ambition to expand deliveries into Belgium and the Netherlands in 2025.

Wouter Bleukx, Business Director Hydrogen at INEOS Inovyn, claimed the company is in a “unique position” to help drive this change. He added, “We transport nearly three million tonnes of PVC annually and continually look at ways to reduce our CO2 footprint.

“We are Europe’s largest operator of electrolysis with over 125 years of experience, but to continue bringing low-carbon hydrogen solutions to market we will need significant support from governments to encourage infrastructure investment and business confidence.”

INEOS joined Daimler’s truck trial in April (2024) and commissioned its logistics partner, VERVAEKE, to manage the transport to a pilot group of customers.

The trial will also provide INEOS Inovyn’s PVC customers with the chance to reduce Scope 3 emissions and strengthen green commitments.
