Green hydrogen in the former Enel power plant in La Spezia: the first demolition works have begun

The project promoted by Enel - which will receive almost 14 million in PNRR funds - to start the production of renewable hydrogen in the former Eugenio Montale coal-fired plant in La Spezia takes another step forward.

A couple of months after the memorandum of understanding signed between the company and the Municipality for the reconversion of the area, which will be partly destined for the production of green H2 (about 10 hectares) and partly for other activities, according to the local press in fact, the demolition phase of the conveyor belt has begun, the structure that moved the coal from the quay to the inside of the plant.

An essential step to be able to reclaim the area and proceed with the implementation of the 'La Spezia Green Hydrogen' project, which, as has already emerged in recent months, provides for a production of around 134 tons of hydrogen per year and a consumption of around 7.7 GWh of renewable energy generated on site.

As reported by the online newspaper Città di La Spezia, the new H2 hub will use 10 hectares for photovoltaic panels and 1.1 hectares for the electrolysis plant and storage batteries. Another 3.4 hectares belonging to the compendium will instead be destined for logistics activities (not related to the hydrogen pole) and 14 hectares will be available for other production activities.

"A historic step awaited by all La Spezia citizens" said the mayor of La Spezia Pierluigi Peracchini, again according to what was reported by the City of La Spezia. “A result for which we have been committed since the first day of our establishment and which has led to the stop to coal and the important agreement signed with Enel which is starting to materialize and which will transform the area into an innovative centre, improving the quality of life in the city and in particular in the Fossamastra district is considerable. The path that La Spezia has decided to take is towards a more sustainable future and as an administration we will continue to firmly pursue every possible action to ensure this. We owe it to the people of La Spezia today and tomorrow."
