EverWind Fuels is set to explore blending hydrogen produced from its Nova Scotian green hydrogen and ammonia production project with natural gas to build demand.

Having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with energy distribution firm Eastward Energy, EverWind hopes to explore opportunities to develop and scale up the hydrogen value chain across the Canadian province.
Eastward operates around 470km of natural gas pipeline mains infrastructure. The pair have said in addition to hydrogen blending, they will explore opportunities for green hydrogen transport, storage and distribution.
Currently developing a green hydrogen and ammonia production hub in Nova Scotia – which will primarily focus on European exports – EverWind has said the new partnership and potential blending could help build demand for green hydrogen.
Trent Vichie, CEO of EverWind Fuels, said the partnership would enable the company to provide Eastward customers with “green energy options and support the development of hydrogen infrastructure in the province.”
“This is a first step toward setting up local supply chains necessary to transition Nova Scotia’s energy sectors from imported fossil fuels to locally produced clean fuels,” he added.
Describing the company’s gas distribution system as “hydrogen-ready,” John Hawkins, President of Eastward Energy, said the firm looked forward to working with EverWind to “deliver green hydrogen to decarbonise sectors that will be difficult to electrify,” including some “large commercial, residential and institutional buildings.”
Hydrogen blending has often been touted as a way to easily decarbonise existing natural gas infrastructure. However, an International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report suggested the carbon reduction benefits could be very limited.
It said a 20% blend of hydrogen, due to hydrogen’s molecular weight, represents around 7% in terms of energy. At best IRENA said blending natural gas with 20% hydrogen would deliver just a 7% CO2 emissions reduction.
But multiple projects have been looking at the pathway to help facilitate financing, execution and provide guaranteed green hydrogen offtake.
