On July 25, JFE Holdings and its wholly owned subsidiary JFE Steel (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and Japan Hydrogen Energy (Minato-ku, Tokyo) moved to Kawasaki City with the aim of "demonstrating the commercialization of the liquefied hydrogen supply chain". Japan Hydrogen Energy is a joint venture between Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Iwatani Sangyo, established in June 2021 with the aim of researching, planning, operating and investing in the global liquefied hydrogen supply chain. "Commercial demonstration of liquefied hydrogen supply chain" will be carried out by Japan Hydrogen Energy.

This demonstration was selected as a Green Innovation Fund project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in August 2021. It aims to establish large-scale liquefied hydrogen transportation technology by sea to prepare for commercial operation of the international hydrogen supply chain in the 2030s.

The Ogishima area of Keihin Industrial Zone, one of Japan's leading industrial zones, is predicted to have potential for hydrogen demand, so it was selected as a demonstration site for liquefied hydrogen, and the company entered into a land lease agreement with JFE Steel, which owns the land. It has been signed. JFE Steel will promptly demolish the existing buildings at the target site.

Japan Hydrogen Energy will then build facilities such as a liquefied hydrogen terminal, cargo handling equipment, and storage tanks. The hydrogen storage tank capacity is expected to be 50,000 m3. Construction of the facility will be completed in 2028, a liquefied hydrogen carrier will arrive in 2029, demonstrations will be completed in 2030, and the goal is to supply hydrogen to Japan in the same year.

JFE signed a joint cooperation agreement with Kawasaki City in February 2021 on land use after suspending upstream processes such as blast furnaces at the steel plant, and a joint cooperation agreement in May 2024 to promote the development of the Ogishima District Leader Area. An agreement has been signed. This demonstration will be the first step in changing the land use in Ogishima, and the company will cooperate with Kawasaki City to develop roads, traffic access, and the environment for receiving liquefied hydrogen carriers.
