Tohoku Electric Power announced on November 15 that it has started a demonstration project for the reuse (reuse) and recycling (reuse of materials) of used solar panels in Miyagi Prefecture. It will be implemented through the "Regional Collection Model Examination Committee", an executive organization within PV CYCLE JAPAN (PVCJ), a non-profit organization that promotes the proper recycling of used solar panels.

By setting up a collection point for used solar panels that are disposed of in Miyagi Prefecture, temporarily storing the panels, and then transporting them to a recycling facility, we will verify the efficiency of collection and transportation by arranging the collection point. Furthermore, we will examine the possibility of a reuse business by inspecting the performance of the panels at the centralized base.

Sendai Kankyo Kaihatsu (Sendai City) will serve as a centralized base, and PVCJ-certified businesses Moriya (Higashine City, Yamagata Prefecture) and Shirakawa Shoten (Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture) will disassemble each material. Ecosystem Hanaoka (Odate City, Akita Prefecture) will use raw materials for the cells (power generation elements) and backsheets after removing the glass by the blasting method.

PVCJ is the Japanese partner of PV CYCLE, an international non-profit organization based in Belgium. Established in January 2021 as a division of the Akita Prefectural Resources Technology Development Organization, a general incorporated foundation that conducts research and development, training, academic and international exchange of mineral resources. Tohoku Electric Power serves as chairman of the PVCJ Regional Collection Model Review Committee.
