    The 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8), led by the Japanese government to discuss development assistance measures for Africa, ended on the 28th in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who attended the event online, announced that he would finance infrastructure projects such as climate change countermeasures and renewable energy. As a related event, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism held the 3rd Japan-Africa Public-Private Infrastructure Conference on the 26th, and publicized Japan's "quality infrastructure" together with participating construction companies.


    Prime Minister Kishida announced that he will invest a total of $30 billion in public and private funds in the African region over the next three years. In the field of infrastructure, it will provide a $4 billion loan under the name of the "African Green Growth Initiative." Specifically, we are developing projects for dam restoration, supporting the construction of hydrogen supply networks, and contributing to trust funds to promote private investment in renewable energy projects. The conference ended with the adoption of the "Tunis Declaration," which stipulated that technology transfer and human resource development would be strengthened between Japan and African countries.


    The Japan-Africa Public-Private Infrastructure Conference was attended by Masafumi Mori, Special Advisor to Prime Minister of Japan, Yusuke Amano, Deputy Director-General for Overseas Projects at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and Yoichi Miyamoto, Chairman of the private organization "Africa Infrastructure Association" (JAIDA) (Chairman of Shimizu Corporation).     In his opening remarks, Chairman Miyamoto stated that "cross-border thinking is particularly important for infrastructure development in Africa, which has many landlocked countries." In addition, he called out, "I would like to contribute to the realization of potential capabilities (in the field of infrastructure) through the relationship of trust between the public and private sectors of both Japan and Africa."


    At the meeting, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism explained the contents of the "G20 Principles for Quality Infrastructure Investment" approved at the G20 Osaka Summit in June 2019. He emphasized the need for continuous cooperation between the client and the company in order to realize the main idea of ​​improving economic efficiency throughout the life cycle.


    Eight JAIDA member companies, Shimizu Corporation, Fujita, Toyo Construction, Konoike Construction, Sakai Heavy Industries, Oriental Consultants Global, Nippon Koei, and Toyota Tsusho, took the stage and explained the projects they are participating in in the African region.
