Calbee and other companies have installed smart trash cans at four locations in Hiroshima Prefecture using IoT, which connects all kinds of things to the Internet. Through the communication function, even from a remote location, it is possible to ascertain in real time how much waste has accumulated, enabling efficient collection of waste. It aims to reduce littering and marine plastic waste.

Installed by Calbee, Hiroshima Prefecture, and Forcetech (Chiyoda, Tokyo), the developer of the smart trash can “SmaGO”. 12 units were prepared at four locations, including the Fukuya Hatchobori Main Store (Hiroshima City) and Setoda Port (Onomichi City). Operates on installed solar power.

Smarto uses an infrared sensor to grasp the accumulation of garbage and can check it on the cloud. When the box is full, it can be compressed to accommodate 5 to 6 times more than a trash can of the same capacity, reducing the number of collection operations. Calbee and others will use a simulator developed by KDDI Research Institute to verify the appropriate installation location and collection frequency.

Most of the marine litter is thought to be the result of inadequate disposal that ends up in the sea. Calbee and others hope to reduce marine plastic waste by using Sumago to reduce littering.
