Spain Hydrogen
- Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition has approved 16 hydrogen valley projects, collaborating with major energy companies like Repsol, EDP, Moeve, BP, and Iberdrola to foster the development of renewable hydrogen clusters.
- These projects, funded by NextGenEU, aim to integrate renewable hydrogen into Spain's energy mix, enhancing the decarbonization of various industrial sectors.
Spain is set to significantly boost its hydrogen economy, with the Ministry for Ecological Transition approving a broad slate of projects aimed at establishing extensive hydrogen valleys across the country. A total of 16 projects have been accepted to share 1.2 billion euros from the NextGenEU funds, with disbursements expected by March 2025. This initiative encompasses all submitted projects, emphasizing Spain's commitment to transitioning to a hydrogen-based energy infrastructure.
Repsol is among the key beneficiaries, with its projects in Tarragona and Cartagena aimed at expanding its hydrogen production capabilities, representing an investment close to 1.5 billion euros.
Moeve's Andalusian Valley project and BP's phase II in Castellón are set to mobilize substantial investments, potentially reaching 3,000 million euros, positioning them as significant hydrogen developments in Spain.
Other notable projects include EDP’s initiatives in Los Barrios and Asturias, Iberdrola’s cluster in Huelva, and CIP and Enagas’s Catalina project in Aragon. The diversity of projects across different regions underscores a nationwide strategy to foster renewable hydrogen production, from large-scale production plans like Heidelberg Materials in Bilbao to more focused projects like Solarig's Turboleta SAF in Aragon.
The overarching goal of these incentives is to enhance the large-scale production and consumption of renewable and electrolytic hydrogen and its derived fuels. This strategy is designed to facilitate the decarbonization of heavy transport and industrial sectors, contributing to the overall competitiveness and sustainability of the Spanish economy.
