Spain plans to meet 74% of industrial hydrogen demand with green hydrogen by 2030, as it trebles its installed electrolyser capacity goals to 12GW.
The government’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan 2023-2030 (PNIEC) increases the 4GW electrolysis target set in 2020 and goes beyond the 11GW ambition mentioned in the draft PNIEC last year.
It comes well ahead of EU-wide goals of meeting 42% of industrial hydrogen demand with green, which was agreed last year with the adoption of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
More broadly, the PNIEC wants to boost renewable energy generation to 160GW by 2030, supported by 22.5GW of storage.
“The transition towards climate neutrality presents multiple opportunities for our country’s industry, through the development of strategic sectors such as renewables, green hydrogen and energy storage throughout its entire value chain,” the strategy reads.
“The deployment of these technologies will also contribute to energy self-sufficiency and a more efficient use of resources, which will result in care for the environment and great resilience to climate change.”
Spain has been doubling down on its green hydrogen support in recent years, with the government most recently getting sign-off from the European Commission to support projects above 100MW with a €1.2bn package.
Furthermore, Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), such as Hygreen Energy and Envision Energy have pledged billions of dollars to build electrolyser factories in the country.
Additionally, Spain’s hydrogen potential was highlighted in the first European Hydrogen Bank auction, which awarded per kilogramme subsidies to projects to close the cost gap with fossil fuels.
Three of the seven selected projects are based in Spain, based on the nation’s potential to produce low-cost renewable energy.
However, analysis by Rystad Energy suggested that despite the subsidies of less than €0.5/kg, none of the EHB-backed projects would produce green hydrogen for less than $5/kg.
