ALL CONSTRUCTION/SUPPORT MEMBER SURVEYS IMPROVE ON-SITE PRODUCTIVITY BY REDUCING INTERNAL DOCUMENTATION, ALSO INDICATING THE AMOUNT OF DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED BY CUSTOMERS

As improving productivity at construction sites becomes a pressing issue, members of the National Construction Industry Association (Zenken, chaired by Masanori Imai) are accelerating efforts to reduce the burden on construction sites. According to a survey of member companies, about 40% of the responding companies are implementing “reduction and simplification of internal documents” when providing on-site support to improve productivity in administrative tasks. However, there are many challenges to achieving productivity improvements, with members complaining that ``there is still a lot of paperwork that needs to be done by the orderer'' and ``the cost of introducing productivity improvement software is high.''

The 2020 Productivity Improvement Efforts Survey was conducted in April and May and received responses from 1,496 member companies. The main customers of member companies are provinces (50.3%), municipalities (19.2%), and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (19.0%), and about 70% of companies are mainly local governments. orders from. The questionnaire asked about the status of initiatives to improve productivity.

When asked about initiatives taken to improve productivity (multiple answers were possible), “reducing/simplifying internal documentation” (41.2%), followed by “ASP methods among order takers”, “On-site information sharing” (38.8%) and “Building a back office” (27.7%).

Among the free comments regarding overall productivity improvement, when it comes to reducing and simplifying documentation, some comments indicated that the number of documents required from the client side was very high. Although the number of construction-related documents has been reduced at the initiative of the ordering party, there was also the opinion that ``there are backup documents (to answer the ordering party's questions), and I don't think they have been simplified.''

In the future, Zenken will reflect the opinions obtained through the questionnaire in exchanging opinions and requests with ordering organizations. With the population decreasing, Zenken representative said: ``It is inevitable that construction efficiency will be necessary to maintain the current workload. If productivity cannot be improved in normal times, it will be difficult to operate during disasters.'' "I am concerned that it will become difficult."
