SUMITOMO MITSUI CONSTRUCTION INTRODUCES HYDROGEN PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT FOR ITS CONCRETE PARTS FACTORY

Sumitomo Mitsui Construction has installed new hydrogen production and storage equipment at the Notogawa plant in Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture. By combining the hydrogen boilers already installed and switching to almost 100% renewable electricity for all electricity purchased at the plant, we have begun operating boilers using green hydrogen as fuel. It was announced on May 17.

The hydrogen production equipment introduced this time uses anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis method and has a hydrogen production capacity of 3Nm3/h. It is produced by Enapter in Italy and its domestic partner company Enoa (Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture). A hydrogen tank with a capacity of 390Nm3 is also installed.

Additionally, almost 100% of renewable electricity uses fossil-free certification. In the future, the company is considering providing electricity through a solar generator with a capacity of 200 kW, but the date of introduction has not yet been determined.

The factory produces precast concrete (PCa) components, and approximately 60% of CO2 emissions are consumed by the boiler used to produce PCa components, and a further 20% is consumed during operation. Concrete factories and cranes predominate. In November 2021, the company developed a "Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality by 2050" and is working to achieve carbon neutrality at its own PCa plant.
