The VindØ Energy Island Consortium project is underway and Shell and its partners provide decades of renewable energy expertise to the Danish site

Participating in the VindØ Energy Island Consortium, Shell is supporting the world's first energy island to be built off the coast of Denmark.
Partners in the exclusive consortium include the country's two largest pension funds, PensionDanmark and PFA, as well as its largest utility, Andel, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partnership (CIP).
According to a CIP member, Thomas Dalsgaard, Shell's expertise will drive a strong strategy for global energy through the project.
Dalsgaard, CIP Partner said: “With decades of experience with major offshore infrastructure projects and strengths as a global energy company, the addition of Shell will strengthen our group of companies. me and the attempt to build Denmark's first energy island.
“Together, the consortium looks forward to starting the bidding process for the energy island and [publishing] tender materials from the Danish Energy Agency.”
What is Energy Island?
About 80 to 100 kilometers off the west coast of Denmark, this energy island is a vision of green energy production that will take advantage of the best conditions for wind energy. The completed project will be connected to 10 gigawatts of offshore wind power used to power Denmark and neighboring countries, and will host an innovation zone to support the development of solutions. large-scale energy storage and power transmission.
However, for the island to be established, only 3 GW was needed.
The island will be connected to the mainland by high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, which will be used to pack energy from an offshore wind farm and transport it inland—Denmark or other countries. other European countries to which the island provides services.
Bidding for the construction of the energy island is underway and the Danish Energy Agency is expected to determine a winner in 2024.
Offshore energy is crucial for future electrification
With reliance on global energy supplies coming to an end due to the Russo-Ukrainian war, countries are accelerating their efforts to go inland. renewable energy to serve the growing demand for sustainable electricity.
The European Union (EU) is a leading consortium of countries in the wind energy sector thanks to wind development on land and offshore. The focus is on offshore wind as the ocean environment provides the right conditions to generate higher amounts of energy.
The energy island vision aligns with the EU's renewable energy deployment strategy, which emphasizes the need for greater access to marine space, improved regional and international cooperation on energy, and develop new technologies to transfer more green energy from offshore to land and beyond .
Offshore wind energy is a key step in the EU's plan and the energy island will likely tap ocean resources to support a 'Green Economy' that harnesses marine energy
