State-controlled fertilizer producer Pupuk Indonesia aims to achieve large-scale green ammonia production by 2045-60, according to the producer at the Pupuk Indonesia Clean Ammonia Forum (PICAF) 2023 in Jakarta on 30 March.
Pupuk Indonesia plans to develop several blue and green ammonia projects across its various facilities in Indonesia, including Bontang, Lhokseumawe, East and West Java, as well as South Sumatra. It is currently the largest grey ammonia producer in Asia at a total capacity of 7mn t/yr. Existing facilities have the potential to be converted to blue/green ammonia facilities.
The group's green ammonia production projects will likely support Indonesia's aim to increase the share of renewable energy as its primary energy source to 63pc by 2060.
The group outlined its decarbonisation roadmap until 2060 during the forum, which was designed to contribute to Indonesia's nationally determined contribution and net zero emission targets. Indonesia's targets for scope one emission reduction for the industrial processes, product use and energy sectors is set at 5.8mn t of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) by 2030, and 20mn t CO2e by 2060. Scope one refers to greenhouse gases from direct operational activities.
The roadmap indicated Pupuk Indonesia's current focus on energy efficiency and green energy projects. The firm plans to start CO2 utilisation and revamping and/or replacing plants by 2025, in addition to achieving small-scale green ammonia production by 2026-2030. It also aims to start ammonia co-firing in coal power plants and blue ammonia production by 2030-2045, as well as achieve large-scale green ammonia production and utilisation by 2045-2060.
