Spanish company Talgo has announced the launch of the unique Hympulso project – creating the world’s first high-speed train powered by hydrogen, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Talgo received a €6.5 million grant for the project from Spain’s national recovery plan.

Consortium partners include Golendus, Ingeteam, Repsol, Sener, and Optimus3D.
The project’s goal is to develop a dual-mode train capable of operating on both regular and high-speed lines.
The new train will use hydrogen or electric traction from batteries or a contact network.
The development of Hympulso is based on Talgo 250 trains, which operate on diesel-electric traction.
The diesel generator will be replaced by a hydrogen fuel cell, and Ingeteam will create reversible converters for battery charging.
Repsol and Golendus will build hydrogen refueling stations, while Sener will conduct risk analysis.
Optimus3D will develop additive manufacturing-based materials.
The Talgo 250 train series, using a track change system, has a maximum speed of 250 km/h and an engine power of 4800 kW.
These trains operate in Spain and Uzbekistan, providing high-speed transportation on different gauges.
