PETRONAS, ENI, and Euglena to Develop Biofuel Refinery in Johor for SAF and Renewable Diesel
PETRONAS is set to build a biofuel refinery in Pengerang, Johor, in partnership with Italy’s ENI and Japan’s Euglena. The refinery will produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO).
According to Lee Ting Han, Johor State Executive Council Member, the project will bring both economic and environmental benefits while strengthening Pengerang’s position as a green energy hub. Pengerang already hosts the PETRONAS Refinery and RAPID as part of the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), one of the largest energy hubs in the region.
Beyond technology, the project is expected to create quality jobs for locals and position Johor as a leader in the fast-growing renewable fuel industry.
For Singapore, SAF supplied from Johor could help Changi Airport and airlines meet international sustainability targets without importing expensive fuel. Renewable diesel could also be used in buses, trucks, and ferries, cutting carbon emissions without replacing existing engines.
Lee emphasized that the Johor State Government will provide full support to ensure the refinery’s success, driving national green transformation, bringing renewable energy technology to Johor, and strengthening Pengerang’s role as a regional energy hub.
