OMV Uses Danish Green Hydrogen-Based Methanol for German Biodiesel

Vienna, Austria / Burghausen, Germany – Austrian oil and gas firm OMV has started using green hydrogen-based e-methanol from European Energy and Mitsui's Kassø project in Denmark as an input for biodiesel sold from its Burghausen refinery in Germany.

OMV claims to be the first energy company in Germany to bring renewable e-methanol into commercial road transport, marketing diesel containing a FAME component produced with the fuel since mid-July. FAME biodiesel is produced by reacting oils or fats with methanol, which becomes chemically incorporated into the resulting fuel and can be blended into road diesel.

    Supply Agreement and Fuel Origin

The e-methanol supply falls under a multi-year offtake agreement between OMV and the European Energy-Mitsui joint venture at the Kassø project. The e-methanol supplied to OMV is certified as a renewable fuel of non-biological origin under EU rules, allowing it to be credited towards EU Renewable Energy Directive III transport requirements.

The Kassø facility, inaugurated in 2025, combines biogenic carbon dioxide with green hydrogen produced by a 52MW Siemens Energy electrolyser to generate 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually. The electricity for production primarily comes from the adjacent 304MW Kassø solar park, one of the largest ground-mounted solar projects in Northern Europe.

The e-methanol supplied to OMV meets RFNBO requirements and goes significantly beyond the minimum greenhouse gas emission reduction requirements for RFNBO compliance.

    Expanding Customer Base

The OMV agreement marks an expansion of end markets for Kassø's output beyond its initial shipping and chemical customers. OMV is the facility's fourth publicly announced offtaker, following AP Moller-Maersk, Lego, and Novo Nordisk.

Maersk uses e-methanol as marine fuel, while Lego and Novo Nordisk use it for chemical product applications, and OMV uses it for land-based transportation fuel.

Mitsui & Co has stated it is expanding the customer base and applications for e-methanol produced in Denmark, with demand expected to expand across Europe, especially Germany, driven by policy frameworks such as RED III.

    OMV's Decarbonisation Commitment

Martijn van Koten, OMV Executive Vice-President Fuels and Chemicals, said the deal is helping the ramp-up of synthetic fuels. He emphasised that by expanding the portfolio of sustainable fuel solutions, OMV is enabling customers to reduce emissions and contributing to the decarbonisation of transport and logistics.

The move aligns with OMV's decarbonisation strategy, under which the company has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 with interim targets for 2030 and 2040. OMV has earmarked an average of 40-50% of its organic investments for sustainable projects during the 2024-2030 period.
