Nordex develops and assembles Spain’s biggest electrolyser

Nordex Electrolysers has developed the first prototype of a 500kW pressurised alkaline electrolyser, capable of producing more than 10kg/hr of hydrogen.

Developed in Navarra, Spain, by the Government of Navarra and Nordex Group joint venture, the module is expected to be the “biggest electrolyser” designed, manufactured and assembled in the country.

It can produce 10kg/hr with an energy consumption of less than 50kWh/kg, working with variable renewable sources. Nordex’s CEO, Luis Solla, anticipates a final design of a serializable MW-scale product in 2026.

The system will now be validated in Nordex’s Navarra facility in Lumbier, where the German-based Nordex Group develops its blades for wind turbines. The statement released by the company said the system “offers competitive synergies to Nordex Electrolysers to become one of the world’s leading electrolyser manufacturers, enabling the Nordex Group to integrate hydrogen generation into its value chain.”

CEO Solla continued, “The first prototype with 50kW, operational since 2023, is currently in the testing and characterisation phase at Nordex Electrolysers’ facility in Puertollano. It has shown very promising results in terms of efficiency and flexibility in relation to renewable energies.”

The President of Navarra, Mariá Chivite, who was present at the electrolyser inauguration in Lumbier, said, “The industrial milestone that this prototype represents for Navarra and Spain, which also ties in with the strategic priorities of the Government of Navarra, including the development of green hydrogen, supporting its development through innovation, talent and a sustainable growth model.”

Nordex Electrolyser is supported by the regional development agency SODENA with a 15% stake. The electrolyser development plan is partially financed with €12m ($12.8m) by the European Commission, through the Hy2Tech programme.
