Nikken Sekkei / Preparing for TCFD disclosure / Japan's first design office to strengthen efforts to contribute to CN

President Omatsu
Nikken Sekkei has begun preparations for disclosure of climate change risk based on the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Information Disclosure (TCFD). As the movement of risk disclosure spreads among clients, disclosure by oneself will lead to strengthening of response to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and carbon neutral (CN). If disclosed, it will be the first architectural design office in Japan. The company has also begun to announce a trial calculation of Scope 3 (emissions of other companies related to business activities). The direction is to disseminate quantitative data, deepen discussions, and improve the accuracy of disclosure risk.
President Atsushi Omatsu revealed in an interview with Nikkan Kensetsu Kogyo Shimbun. President Omatsu said, "We are preparing for disclosure based on TCFD ahead of the design industry. We think that we can change by disclosing it." He also acknowledged that TCFD support is indispensable for expanding business globally, as he has many jobs for overseas clients.
In the "Sustainability Report 2022" released in April, the company disclosed the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from corporate activities in 2021 and included Scope 3 (emissions of other companies related to business activities). Emissions are also included for the first time. GHG emissions from the domestic design project completed in the same year over the next 50 years are also presented as reference values. It is estimated that 1,013,820 tons (excluding emissions during construction) will be discharged from about 100 buildings (total of about 2.1 million square meters).
President Omatsu said, "The standard method has not been established, and there may be some parts that need to be corrected." Finding a standard method will be beneficial to CN. "
