World Hydrogen Day: Overcoming Enduring Challenges
The challenges facing the global hydrogen market were distilled in discussions at the recently held World Power-to-X Summit in Marrakech. As the sector marks World Hydrogen Day today (8 October), the industry conversation continues to move towards pragmatic realism, reflecting both the breakthroughs and challenges.
Setting the Scene: Complexity and Realism
Global hydrogen demand increased to almost 100 million tonnes in 2024, up 2% from 2023 and in line with overall energy demand growth, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Frank Wouters, Director General at EU-funded renewable energy and hydrogen development network MED-GEM, said at the first summit five years ago, hydrogen had no limits.
However, discussions at the recent summit highlighted the complexities and challenges facing the hydrogen sector.
