"H2 decentralized" platform publishes study on business models for decentralized hydrogen concepts

The ramp-up of the hydrogen economy in Germany is picking up speed. On the way to climate neutrality in 2045, the energy source will be in high demand. Decentralized hydrogen concepts, which generate and use hydrogen from renewable energies in regional clusters across Germany, can be an important building block for climate neutrality and security of supply in the future.

The "H2 decentralized" platform has now published a study with which it provides information on the current state of technology and regulation in this market segment. She analyzes seven exemplary business models. The first solutions are already ready for the market and are asserting themselves in their market segments. Decentralized hydrogen concepts accelerate the integrated energy transition if they contribute to increasing the flexibility of the overall system and make renewable electricity storable seasonally.

The key findings of the H2 decentralized study are:

    • Decentralized hydrogen concepts are an important building block for climate neutrality and security of supply. So far it has not been sufficiently illuminated.
    • There are already numerous technologically mature technologies available today for the decentralized and local production, storage, transport and use of hydrogen.
    • Decentralized business models for hydrogen can help drive the energy transition locally.

The basis for a climate-effective and cost-efficient ramp-up of the hydrogen economy is the acceleration of the expansion of renewable energies and credible, cross-sectoral and socially acceptable CO 2 pricing. In order for the full potential of decentralized hydrogen concepts to be exploited, it is necessary to create reliable framework conditions. The national hydrogen strategy and regulatory framework should be designed accordingly.

The study was created as part of the “H2 decentralized” platform, which was founded and coordinated by the German Energy Agency (dena) in 2021 and is supported by 26 standard and network partners from the industry. You can find out more about the platform and the companies involved here: www.dena.de/h2-dezentral .
