NEDO SELECTS FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND POWER OPERATOR OFF AKITA AND AICHI PREFECTURES

The New Energy and Technology Development Organization (NEDO) is conducting a demonstration project for floating offshore wind power generation in real waters, including the semi-sub-type off the southern coast of Akita Prefecture (company chaired by Marubeni Offshore Wind) and floating project Offshore wind power generation project in Tahara city, Aichi province. A semi-subproject (host company is Seatech) was selected for the project offshore Toyohashi city.

As part of the Green Innovation Fund (GI) project, the project will be promoted as a ``lower cost of offshore wind generation'' project aimed at expanding the adoption of wind generation floating offshore by reducing costs. On June 11, it was announced that two research topics have been applied to the project's Phase 2 R&D category, ``Floating Offshore Wind Demonstration Project.''

This project is part of the offshore wind power industry, which is one of the priority areas planned for implementation in the Green Growth Strategy. Currently, the level of technological maturity is relatively low but long-term support will lead to progress in technological development and important policy impacts. Phase 1 from January 2022 will focus on ``wind turbines'', ``floating platform manufacturing'', ``floating installations'' and ``power systems'' among the 8 chain areas supply based on the ``Technology Development Roadmap to Enhance the Industrial Competitiveness of Offshore Wind.'' A total of 18 topics were selected from four areas: ” and ``operation and maintenance '', at the same time the development of the underlying technologies is progressing.

In Phase 2, to reduce the cost of future mass production of offshore wind power generation equipment, we will combine the basic technology development results of Phase 1 and carry out the demonstration project performed on real waters using a large 10 MW wind turbine. or more. This project is carried out in the form of a new public offering in an open manner to those who received funding from Phase 1. The budget is about 85 billion yen (the scale of NEDO support) and the period is from 2024 to 2030 .

Topic 1 “Floating offshore wind power demonstration project off the southern coast of Akita Prefecture with the goal of expanding overseas through cost reduction” is a project to build two wind turbines with each capacity of over 15 MW in waters about 25 km from the coast. southern coast of Akita prefecture and has a depth of about 400 m. It is expected to begin operations around fall 2029. A semi-sub-type floating stem will be adopted. The lead company is Marubeni Offshore Wind, and the participating companies are Tohoku Electric Power, a floating wind power company off the south coast of Akita Prefecture, Japan Marine United, Toa Kensetsu Kogyo, Tokyo Seizu Fiber Rope, Kanden Plant, JFE Engineering and Nakanippon Airlines .

Topic 2, ``Aichi Prefecture Offshore Floating Wind Energy Demonstration Project'' will install a wind turbine with a capacity of over 15MW off the coast of Tahara City and Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture. A semi-sub style floating body will be applied. The management company is Seatech. Participating companies are Hitachi Zosen, Kajima Corporation, Hokutaku and Mitsui OSK
