The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro fuel cell, which was presented just a few days ago, will be used in northern Italy from the end of this year. Public transport operator SASA has ordered nine of the 18-meter articulated version of the electric bus with a fuel cell range extender.

SASA wants to use this in South Tyrol – specifically between Meran and Bozen. Deliveries are scheduled to take place between late 2023 and early 2024. The northern Italian transport operator is thus the first known customer for the new eCitaro variant. The 18-metre version of the eCitaro fuel cell celebrated its market launch parallel to its first appearance at the Global Public Transport Summit in Madrid. It cannot yet be ordered as a solo bus. We have prepared all the technical details on the new range extender version of the Mercedes-Benz city bus here .
In a statement of its own, SASA only commented very briefly on the purchase: “The eCitaro fuel cell has a range of 350 kilometers and offers space for up to 128 passengers. According to experts, due to the interaction of two technologies, it is ideal for the requirements in South Tyrol.
In the meantime, SASA Bozen has placed another order - with the Portuguese manufacturer CaetanoBus for the delivery of five fuel cell buses with a length of 12 meters. As reported, SASA has also been using twelve Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen fuel cell buses since 2021.
