    On September 23, Aichi University held the opening ceremony for the new “Center Bldg.” at its Toyohashi Campus in Aichi Prefecture. The building, developed as part of the university’s 80th anniversary project, is expected to serve as a hub for academic research and community collaboration. The design and supervision were carried out by Nikken Sekkei, and construction was completed by Konoike Construction Co.

    In his opening remarks, Chairman Hirose Hiroki emphasized:

    “This new building is a symbolic and modern design that connects the long history of the Toyohashi Campus with the future. What matters most is enriching the learning experience, and every detail was carefully considered to ensure that students can enjoy a fulfilling campus life.”

    Aichi Prefecture Vice Governor Yukio Eguchi noted that developing the next generation of talent is essential for the region’s future, and Aichi University’s role is becoming increasingly vital. Toyohashi Mayor Naoto Nagasaka also stressed the importance of nurturing talent to support regional development and expressed his commitment to deepening collaboration with the university.

    During the construction report, Tetsuya Shiota, Design Group Director at Nikken Sekkei, explained the architectural features of the building. Kakushi Hosokawa, Director of Konoike’s Nagoya Branch, reflected on the project, highlighting noise and vibration mitigation efforts and thanking all parties for their cooperation in bringing the project to successful completion. Chairman Hirose presented letters of appreciation to representatives of Nikken Sekkei and Konoike, followed by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

    Founded in 1946 on the former site of the Imperial Japanese Army Officer School and the 15th Division, Aichi University has been working on comprehensive upgrades to the Toyohashi Campus since 2022 due to aging facilities.

    Key Facts about the Center Building:

    • Structure: 4-story steel-frame, total floor area approx. 11,500 m²

    • 1st Floor: Exchange space, large and medium lecture halls

    • 2nd Floor: Workspaces and ICT-related facilities

    • 3rd Floor: Library space with 1 million volumes and study areas

    • 4th Floor: Top-floor study space with panoramic views, harmonized with the natural surroundings

    The Center Building is set to become a new academic landmark for the Toyohashi Campus, connecting students, faculty, researchers, and the local community.
