Kagome announced on August 29 that it will install a battery storage system at its Fujimi plant in Fujimi-cho, Nagano Prefecture, and will begin operating it from September. The system installed is a 1MW lithium-ion iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 2MWh.

In 2021, the plant put into operation a 1.3MW solar power generation system through an on-site PPA (power purchase agreement) model, meeting about 20% of the plant's electricity usage. However, when the plant is not in operation, the amount of solar power generated exceeds demand, so output is inhibited, making maximum use of solar energy a challenge.
The introduction of battery storage helps regulate electricity usage, allowing solar equipment to operate at full capacity where it was previously limited. In addition, approximately 300kW of on-site PPA solar panels will be installed, increasing solar generation to approximately 30% of the plant’s electricity consumption. These efforts are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 200 tons per year.
We will also consider meeting the increased DR (demand response) demand from grid operators by using battery storage and production adjustments. In addition to battery storage and solar power generation, the plant will introduce a system in 2023 to extract biogas through methane fermentation using plant residues and use it as heat. Since 2020, CO2 and waste hot water discharged from the plant have been used in a large-scale tomato growing facility next door.
Kagome Group aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, reducing Scope 1 and 2 (direct emissions and indirect emissions from purchased electricity) by 42% compared to FY2020 (1.5oC target) by FY2030. We aim to reduce Scope 3 (indirect supply chain emissions) by 13% and achieve SBT Initiative certification.
