Hydrogéne de France (HDF) Energy has inaugurated its fuel cell manufacturing plant located in Blanquefort, France.

The plant will be capable of developing 1MW+ fuel cells, which are expected to serve the decarbonisation of heavy maritime and rail mobility, along with the production of electricity for public power grids.

Up to 80% of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell tech will be exported from the facility, which is anticipated to complete its industrial process this year. In 2025, the pre-production phase will begin, before industrialisation from 2026 onwards – with the aim of producing 1GW per year by 2030.

HDF will launch successive R&D and industrialisation programmes for several product ranges from 1 to 10MW, in order to meet efficiency, durability and cost requirements.

The former Ford gearbox manufacturing plant in Blanquefort, near Bordeaux, will benefit from 150 experts. HDF began construction of the plant last year (2023), after it received an IPO in 2021.

A statement released by the company said, “HDF Energy’s fuel cells are paving the way for a new era of environmentally friendly transport by replacing diesel engines in freight and shunting locomotives with a hydrogen propulsion system.

“The fuel cell is the most strategic component of the Renewstable® hydrogen power plants developed worldwide by HDF Energy. The fuel cells in these plants produce non-intermittent renewable electricity, day and night, thanks to massive storage of photovoltaic or wind energy in the form of hydrogen.”
