On September 20, NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) announced that it will conduct the development and field demonstration of mass production technology for perovskite solar cells in parallel with the Green Innovation Fund (GI)'s “Next Generation Solar Energy Development Program.” Cells announced that it has started a new “Next Generation Solar Cell Demonstration Project” to be carried out in the future and has selected a research topic.

This project will simultaneously develop mass production technology that can be mass produced while maintaining stable quality, and conduct practical demonstrations targeting domestic and international markets. Through this, we aim to achieve a power generation cost of 14 yen/kWh, promote the early popularization of perovskite solar cells, and enhance the competitiveness of Japan's solar power generation industry. The period is 7 years from 2024 to 2030, and the budget is 37.8 billion yen.
The selected theme is “Demonstration of mass production of lightweight, flexible perovskite solar cells”. We will develop mass production technology using the R2R (roll-to-roll) method and conduct various field demonstrations such as installation on low-load-bearing roofs and on walls of high-rise buildings. The implementation period is 5 years from 2024 to 2028. The theme scale is approximately 18.3 billion yen, and the amount of support is approximately 12.5 billion yen (including the incentive amount). The subsidy ratio is two-thirds and a half. The leading companies will be Sekisui Chemical and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings.
In the GI Fund's next-generation solar cell development project, six projects from five enterprises were selected in 2021 for the "Next-Generation Solar Cell Commercialization Project", and research and development activities are currently underway. This demonstration project follows the commercialization project, but we have publicly called for promising enterprises to achieve the goal through the commercialization project, allowing them to start the demonstration project ahead of schedule without waiting until the end of fiscal year 2025, which is the end of the project. We plan to continue to attract more demonstration projects and increase the number of companies implementing them.
