KANTO DEVELOPMENT BUREAU ORGANIZES TONE RIVER WATER SYSTEM EROSION CONTROL/FURUKOSAWA SABO DAM COMPLETION CEREMONY/HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MEMBER YUKO KOBUCHI RAKUSUDAMA LAUNCHES

In January 2018, a sudden hydroelectric explosion occurred on Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, overlooking Kusatsu Onsen (Kusatsu Town, Gunma Prefecture), one of the best hot springs in Japan. In response to the eruption, the Tone River System Sabo Office of the Kanto Regional Development Bureau constructed the ``Furukosawa Sabo Dam'', which was built downstream of Fukozawa, and a completion ceremony was held on 15. About 100 people attended, including Junichi Kanbara, Director of the Conservation Division, Sabo Bureau, Land Conservation and Water Management Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and Hiroyuki Fujimaki, Director of the Kanto Development Bureau, as well as Yuko Obuchi, member of the House of Representatives, and Mayor Nobutada Kuroiwa, Mayor of Kusatsu Town. The successful completion was celebrated by the launch of Kusudama.

The pendulum dam is a slot steel dam with a width of 168 meters and a height of 14.5 meters. It was built about 3 kilometers upstream from the hot spring town of Kusatsu to protect the city from volcanic mudflows during eruptions. Construction began in April 2019 and was completed in March this year. Thanks in part to the national recovery budget, the project was completed in a short period of about five years, despite a winter period where construction was impossible.

Because the building is located in a hot spring area, acid resistance was needed during construction, so a plastic coating on the concrete surface and a rubber protection layer at the base of the steel slot were added. Designed by Chuo Consultants. Construction was handled by Sada Construction and Maebashi Jiken.

At the ceremony, Director Kambara expressed gratitude to Kusatsu Town and other local stakeholders, saying: ``We have prioritized shortening the construction period and achieving early development. We have been granted land for a town-run ski resort, which is a valuable tourism resource.” Ta.

Obuchi said: “After the ceremony, I want people to see the dam with their own eyes and learn about the functions and effects of the project, which will help them be more aware of daily disaster prevention.” . Looking back at the time of the eruption, Mayor Kuroiwa emphasized: ``Our town is a tourist destination. The most important thing is safety and security.'' ''We are a town that lives with a volcano. Mount Motoshirane is in a sense a treasure mountain with gushing hot springs (despite its eruptions). To coexist with the mountain, we requested the construction of this sabo dam.' ' He once again expressed his gratitude for the maintenance.
