PREPARATIONS FOR TOKYO AQUARIUM / KASAI RINKAI (EDOGAWA WARD) BEGIN FOR MAINTENANCE AND CONSTRUCTION OF NEW FACILITY

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will begin preparatory work for the construction of the new Kasai Rinkai Aquarium. The construction site is north of the existing aquarium in Edogawa Ward, where the Freshwater Biology Center is currently located. The area surrounding the museum, including the museum itself, was closed to the public on the 19th. Creatures kept in captivity after the 20th will be manually transferred to the backyard of the existing aquarium. Construction work will then begin to reroute buried power lines and water pipes in the same area, as well as dismantling the freshwater aquarium, which is targeted to begin this summer.

The construction site is Rinkai-cho 6, Edogawa-ku. This is where a new aquarium will be built. Existing underground infrastructure for the aquarium. Since it was decided to preserve and use the building, the layout will be changed so as not to affect the construction of the new aquarium.

Currently, the construction site is home to a freshwater aquarium as well as a coastal natural area and lawn plaza. Near the Museum of Freshwater Biology, coastal nature has been artificially recreated and many creatures live there. The riverside environment has been recreated inside the new aquarium. The ecosystem from the source to the river mouth will be on display.

The Kasai Rinkai Aquarium Development Project, which includes construction and maintenance of the new aquarium, is being handled by a team represented by NEC Capital Solutions. Basic design will be completed by November 2023 and implementation design is currently underway. Construction preparation work will also be carried out in parallel. The detailed design phase is expected to conclude in September. Construction work is expected to begin in December 2017 and be completed in September 2027. The park is scheduled to open in March 2028 after a period of preparation.

The main building of the new aquarium is an RC structure with one underground floor and two above ground floors. The total floor area, including the main building and the energy center building, will be approximately 24,000 square meters. The amount of water in the tank is about 4,800 tons. The building's exterior resembles a hill that blends into the greenery, and plans call for the building to be equipped with state-of-the-art environmental mitigation systems. There will also be a ``Kyosei no Mori'' tree square on the premises that is open to non-aquarium users.

The existing aquarium in need of preservation was designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi. Experts will exchange opinions on the method to be used during the financial year.
