In fiscal 2025, Susaki City in Kochi Prefecture will begin construction of a "skate park," a facility dedicated to street sports such as skateboarding and BMX that uses paved surfaces. The ski area is expected to cover about 2,000 square meters, making it one of the largest ski areas in Chugoku and Shikoku. The goal is to complete the project within the same fiscal year and begin operating it in fiscal 2024.
A total of 1.1832 billion yen was allocated for the skate park development project in the initial budget proposal for fiscal year 2013. The timing and method of construction have not yet been decided. The land is leased from the owner and developed. The area of the land is approximately 5,800 square meters. Supervision will be entrusted to the Japan Skate Park Association. The basic and detailed design is being carried out by the Wakatake Urban Planning Institute.
Skateboarding has been added to the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and Japanese athletes have done well, and they have also won medals at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The number of enthusiasts in the city is growing across generations, especially among young people, and securing venues for competitions is becoming a challenge.
In Kochi Prefecture, a skate park opened in April 2018 at Yasunami Sports Park in Shimanto City. The facility is located in the west of the prefecture, and given its accessibility from the east, there are high hopes for its development in Susaki City, located in the center of the prefecture. The city hopes that hosting the tournament will revitalize the area and attract young people to settle there.
