The COP29 Presidency has prioritized hydrogen in its climate agenda, launching the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration to boost clean hydrogen use and support global decarbonization efforts.

The declaration outlines a comprehensive plan for enhancing hydrogen production and utilization, establishing a framework for international collaboration and stakeholder engagement in the lead-up to COP30.

The COP29 Presidency has officially placed hydrogen at the forefront of its agenda through the introduction of the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration. This initiative is part of a broader Action Agenda aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the climate negotiations and catalyzing further actions to combat climate change.
The COP29 Hydrogen Declaration lays out an ambitious plan to accelerate the decarbonization of hydrogen production and facilitate a global energy transition. It calls for the establishment of targets, incentives, and mandates that will boost demand for clean hydrogen. This includes initiating public procurement programs and fostering public-private partnerships to drive forward these objectives.
Additionally, the declaration seeks endorsements from various stakeholders to support the creation of global standards for hydrogen and the mutual recognition of certification schemes. This move is designed to streamline and standardize hydrogen usage worldwide, enhancing its role in achieving global climate targets.
Building on the momentum from the Hydrogen Breakthrough initiative launched at COP26, the COP29 event will introduce the "Hydrogen Breakthrough: Priority International Actions 2025". This will serve as a detailed framework and roadmap for prioritizing and coordinating international efforts on hydrogen ahead of COP30. A high-level roundtable discussion at COP29 will also provide a platform for stakeholders to review and assess previous initiatives, discuss country-level announcements, and explore funding mechanisms for clean hydrogen projects.
UNIDO Director General, Gerd Müller, emphasized the critical role of multi-stakeholder initiatives in advancing green energy solutions, including hydrogen. He stated, “Multi-stakeholder initiatives to advance green energy storage and hydrogen solutions are key to achieving our climate goals. UNIDO is supporting the COP29 Presidency with our expertise in promoting innovative technologies, partnerships, solutions, and policies to drive climate-friendly industrial development and we are ready to start implementing the new initiatives.”
