The Dutch government on Friday will raise the subsidies available to support green hydrogen production by an additional EUR 4.9 billion (USD 5.34bn) in total, aiming to scale up the industry amid efforts to reach national climate goals.
Under the plan, an additional EUR 1 billion will be set aside for 2024 and a further EUR 3.9 billion will be allocated in the subsequent years.
Back in 2020, the government earmarked EUR 9 billion to support the green hydrogen rollout this decade as part of a wider EUR-35-billion fund dedicated to energy transition initiatives. Of the total, around EUR 300 million will go to promote imports of green hydrogen.
The Netherlands’ goal is to have at least 4 GW of green hydrogen capacity in operation by 2030 and 8 GW by 2032 depending on the extent of offshore wind deployment. Its national hydrogen strategy released in March 2020 envisages initiatives for developing demand and regional infrastructure for the green fuel and the scale-up of the installed electrolyser capacity to 500 MW by 2025.
