Chevron New Energies will develop a 5MW hydrogen production project located in California’s Central Valley.

Utilising solar power, land, and non-portable produced water, the project will produce up to two tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per day before potentially expanding to support a hydrogen refuelling network.
Chevron expects the project to span across multiple years, with the start of commercial operations set to depend on supportive legislative and regulatory energy policies, final engineering design, permitting and obtaining the necessary materials.
Austin Knight, Vice-President for Hydrogen at Chevron New Energies, explained, “Our ability to meet growing hydrogen demand and help build hydrogen fuelling infrastructure in California to a commercial scale with more widespread adoption will be strongly led by state and federal energy policies that promote new lower carbon energy solutions.”
Knight added that the company already offers low-carbon sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and renewable diesel, among others, as part of its portfolio, which will expand with the addition of this project.
Richard Chapman, President and CEO of Kern Economic Development Corporation, said, “By locating expected production in the Central Valley, we believe the project will be well positioned to meet the demand of customers along an important transportation corridor, as well as having proximity to key California urban markets.”
