The Port and Airport Department of the Kanto Regional Development Bureau announced on September 25 that the Kawasaki Port Container Terminal has been selected for the Carbon Neutral Port (CNP) Certification — a program launched by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) in March 2025.

The CNP program evaluates and certifies ports with advanced facilities and functions that contribute to decarbonization, on a five-level scale, encouraging other ports to adopt similar initiatives. Kawasaki Port earned recognition for its efforts such as:

    • Adoption of LED lighting throughout the terminal,

    • Operation of gantry cranes powered by CO₂-free renewable electricity,

    • Formulation of a Port Decarbonization Promotion Plan,

    • Introduction of hydrogen-converted transfer cranes (two units) to further decarbonize cargo handling equipment.

These measures earned Kawasaki Port the second-highest rating, “Level 4+” under the CNP scheme.

The certificate presentation ceremony will take place on October 9 at the Yokohama No.2 Joint Government Building (5-57 Kitanakadori, Naka Ward, Yokohama). In addition to Kawasaki, Nagoya, Osaka, Takamatsu, and Hakata ports were also selected for CNP certification.

The CNP certification is valid for three years and helps certified ports appeal to shippers, shipping companies, and port-related businesses, while enhancing the overall brand value of the port.
