    Nikken Sekkei (Tokyo), Eurus Energy Holdings (Tokyo), NTT Anode Energy (Tokyo), and Regenerative Infrastructure (R11i, Tokyo) announced on October 1 that they will launch a comprehensive consulting service for building digital infrastructure, with a focus on data centers.

    Background & Challenges

    With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), the role of data centers as key social infrastructure is expanding quickly. However, without improvements in energy efficiency:

    • Power demand could rise to 24 billion kWh annually by 2030, and 500 billion kWh by 2050.

    • Around 85% of Japan’s data centers are currently concentrated in Tokyo and Osaka, raising disaster risks (e.g., Tokai Trough earthquake) and issues of aging facilities with limited redevelopment.

    Roles of Each Partner

    • Nikken Sekkei → Architecture & facility design.

    • Regenerative Infrastructure (R11i) → Data center management.

    • Eurus Energy → Renewable energy development & operation.

    • NTT Anode Energy → Telecommunications, energy procurement & data center-related services.

    The companies will combine their expertise to provide end-to-end solutions for next-generation data centers, tailored to customer needs—from edge facilities to hyperscale centers.

    Government & Regional Strategy

    The Japanese government is promoting the expansion of data centers in Hokkaido and Kyushu, where renewable energy can be more easily secured. The goal is to shift from the current “two-pole” concentration (Tokyo and Osaka) to a four-pole system, eventually creating a nationwide distributed network.

    Energy Efficiency & Innovation

    The consortium aims to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.1–1.2, significantly better than Japan’s current average (≈1.6) and above the government’s 2030 target (≤1.4).
    This will be achieved by:

    • Advanced liquid cooling systems.

    • AI-based air conditioning optimization.

    • Proposals for server environments adapted to usage conditions.

    Future Development

    In addition to new builds, the companies also plan to repurpose existing facilities such as outdated factories and old data centers, upgrading them into modern, energy-efficient data hubs.
