The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will begin a comprehensive study on converting the structural design process to 3D. The next step is to standardize the 3D models used when designing in 3D, bearing in mind that the adoption of BIM/CIM will become standard in civil engineering directly from 2023 and the use of 3D visualization is becoming popular among contractors. Pilot work will begin in FY 2014 and issues will be addressed from the perspective of productivity improvement efficiency, required standards and software, etc. First, we will create a benchmark roadmap 3D design.
The creation of 3D model symbology standards has been considered for a long time but according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, there has been no progress in standardizing 3D design. In design work applying BIM/CIM, 3D models are often created separately after 2D designs and the situation is far from improving work efficiency.
On the 22nd, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism explained at the meeting of the government-academia-industry organization ``BIM/CIM Promotion Committee'' (led by Nobuyoshi Yabuki , professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka chaired the University) direction to consider the ideal form of 3D models for 3D design.
If 3D designs become a reality, if 2D drawings are needed, they can be created by cutting them out of the 3D model. Quantity calculations can also be performed automatically from the 3D model. The appropriate level of detail needs to be determined, such as continuing to use 2D for tasks and parts that would be difficult or ineffective in 3D.
During FY 2014, existing standards will also be reviewed to ensure they are consistent with the implementation of BIM/CIM principles. The 3D Product Creation Guide will be renamed and revised to "BIM/CIM Processing Guide (tentative name)" to raise awareness about the use of data, not just 3D models. We will build a database that can "organize/manage", "search/collect" and "process" information held by BIM/CIM with the aim of improving the productivity of orders row. First, we will focus on improving the efficiency of cost estimating and design changes, while creating an environment for data utilization.
