Egyptian authorities are planning a $17bn green hydrogen project in the Sinai desert that would be powered by 3.1GW of solar panels backed by pumped hydro storage, local reports say.
Solar energy would power electrolysers during the day and also pump water uphill to a mountain-top reservoir, with the stored water running downhill to turn electricity-generating turbines through the night to allow round-the-clock electrolysis.
The plant would be built over a 127sq km area near the small coastal city of El Tor and produce 400,000 tonnes of renewable H2 annually that could be exported to Europe via the Suez Canal, according to documents seen by the Al Arabiya news cha
